Location of the magnitude 6.3 earthquake in the Vanuatu region.

The earthquake occurred in an area for which we announced INCREASED SEISMIC HAZARD ALERT due to the presence of D-waves on January 16, 2024, as shown in the image below and here. D-waves (D stands for Dangerous) are potentially dangerous tectonic waves due to the elevated seismic activity along these waves, including major seismic event and their contribution to the elevation of tectonic tractions (shear- and dynamic traction) in multiple regions worldwide.

Picture 2: Regions exposed to higher earthquake-triggering based on the D-wave, posted on January 16, 2024.

Quantectum's Macroseismic Intensity Map suggests that the maximum intensity for the earthquake is classified as “VII”, signifying a very strong shaking intensity, while damage assessment suggests a moderate level. The most potentially exposed city was Port-villa (pop. 36,000) 44 km from the epicenter.

There have been no reports of damage, injuries, or casualties as a result of the earthquake so far. Also, no tsunami warning was issued.
