Picture 1: Location of the magnitude 5.1 earthquake in Taiwan.

The earthquake occurred due to the rotational singularity (marked with a yellow ellipse) that is present in Taiwan, the Philippines, and Indonesia regions. We posted about it on January 5, 2024, and is accessible here.

Rotational singularity can occur when the fault planes are "infinitely" close to each other or the theoretically infinite shear- and normal tractions are associated with finite (micro)rotations within infinitely small regions (volumes of rocks). In practice, this happens when tectonic waves with low Cosserat lengths (generally) interact with each other within a region. Its shape can be elongated (like e.g. before the Great Noto Earthquake in Japan) or circular."

According to the initial seismic data, the earthquake is not expected to have caused significant damage. However, it likely resulted in a mild tremor felt by many individuals in the vicinity of the epicenter. Hualien City (population 350,500), situated 39 km from the epicenter, may have experienced slight shaking. The effects might have extended to Puli (population 86,400) at a distance of 56 km, Zhongxing New Village (population 25,500) 81 km away, Nantou City (population 105,700), and Douliu (population 104,700) at 82 km and 89 km respectively, Yuanlin (population 124,700) at 92 km, and Taichung (population 1,040,700) also at 92 km from the epicenter, as reported by the VolcanoDiscovery.

There have been no reports of damage, injuries, or casualties as a result of the earthquake so far.
