Global Largest Earthquakes in April 2022

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS) earthquake report, we witnessed 1,458 earthquakes with a magnitude above 4 in April 2022. Among them, 1305 were of magnitude between 4 to 4.9, 145 of magnitude from 5.0 to 5.9, and 8 of magnitude 6 and above1.

In April we witnessed 483 earthquakes more than in February and 287 more than in March, however, there were fewer earthquakes with a magnitude above 6 (9 in February, 14 in March, 8 in April).

The largest earthquake occurred on April 21st in the North Pacific Ocean, 99 km south of Leon, Nicaragua, with a moment magnitude of 6.7 at a depth of 25.3 km2. It occurred in the region where the Cocos and Caribbean plates collide. Damage to the infrastructure and power outages were reported.

Our short report on the Nicaragua earthquake is available here and here.

The second largest earthquake in April occurred 2.7 km southwest of Port Vila, Shefa Province, Vanuatu on April 10th, 2022. The magnitude 6.3 earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 km and was felt by many people in the wider epicentral area. However, it did not cause significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, and broken windows among others3.

One more earthquake, that happened in April and is worth mentioning, is a magnitude 5.2 earthquake in Xingwen County, in Chinese province Sichuan (1,000 miles southwest of Beijing and 425 miles north of the China-Vietnam border). It occurred on 4th of April, at a depth of 10 km and caused damage to the infrastructure, highway collapse, power outages, and train services disruption, leaving more than 1,660 homes damaged4.

One of China's most devastating earthquakes also occurred in Sichuan province in 2008. The quake of 8.0 magnitude was felt in a vast area around the epicenter and ultimately killed close to 90,000 people. It also left millions homeless and was followed by hundreds of major aftershocks.

Finally, big attention was drawn by seismologists in April to the Bosnia and Herzegovina magnitude 5.7 earthquake that happened on the 22nd of April, at the depth of 5 km. It was the largest earthquake to hit the country in 52 years, leaving more than 1000 buildings damaged and more than 50 destroyed. One person died and two more were injured, when a rock fell down on the family house. The earthquake was also felt in Croatia, Albania, Kosovo, Montenegro, Serbia, Italy, Austria, and Slovenia.

At Quantectum we reported on Bosnia and Herzegovina earthquake. You can check its details here, the precursory mask here, and the ACP field here.
