Global Largest Earthquakes in November 2022

According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) earthquake report, we witnessed 1402 earthquakes with a magnitude of 4.0 and above in November 20221, which is 63 earthquakes more than the previous month.

Among the earthquakes that occurred in November 2022, there were four earthquakes with a magnitude of 7.0 and above, 17 earthquakes with a magnitude from 6.0, and 184 earthquakes with a magnitude 5.0 and above.

According to the EMSC, the largest earthquakes in November 2022 were the following:

  • The magnitude 7.3 earthquake in the Tonga region on the 11th of November;
  • The magnitude 7.0 earthquake in the Solomon Islands on the 22nd of November;
  • The magnitude 7.0 earthquake south of the Fiji Islands on the 9th of November;
  • The magnitude 7.0 earthquake in the Fiji region on the 12th of November;
  • The magnitude 6.9 earthquake in the southwest of Sumatra, Indonesia, on the 18th of November.

The largest earthquake in November was the magnitude 7.3 earthquake in the Tonga region, 211 km from the capital Nuku'alofa. It occurred on the 11th of November at a depth of 45 km.

It struck Tonga just before midnight local time and even though it occurred underwater, it was still felt across the whole of Tonga. The government even issued a tsunami alert and advised people to evacuate immediately inland to high ground, or to the 3rd level of a steel or concrete building until the threat had passed2.

Another strong seismic event of the previous month was the magnitude 7.0 earthquake that happened on the 22nd of November in the Solomon Islands, in the Pacific Ocean, near the south-west region of Malango. It occurred at a depth of 10 km. A second earthquake, with a magnitude of 6.0, struck nearby 30 minutes later. In Honiara, power outages occurred and many buildings, including an Australian government office and the city's airport were damaged. It was reported that four people were injured and that a 0.03 m tsunami was observed3.
